WHO WE ARE
Sankofa Family and Community Services is a volunteer-based, non-profit organization that provides culturally-enriching services, information, programs and support that enhance the lives of families and individuals, including children and youth at risk within the Ghanaian and African Canadian community in the Greater Toronto Area.
Mission
Our mission is to improve the wellbeing of individuals and families and support their efforts to integrate and realize their full potential.
Aims and Objectives
Our aim is to empower all members of the community to live free from violence, poverty and inequity. Our objectives include:
- Supporting healthy and effective integration through client-centered, culturally sensitive and linguistically appropriate services and programs
- Creating a community hub and information clearinghouse to facilitate access to relevant community resources and expertise
- Providing family counselling/referral services in family crisis situations
- Helping individuals and families in searching for jobs, dealing with isolation, violence, mental health, elderly care as well as school, legal, child behaviour and protection issues
- Promoting change in attitude, knowledge and behaviour to hone family dynamics, reduce conflict and promote healthy living; and
- Establishing partnerships and networks that will enable community members to thrive, both personally and professionally and to meet their goals and expectations.

OUR PROGRAM AND SERVICES
We provide supportive counselling, responsive public education and advocacy, case management, mentorship, parenting and family support services, including respite, referrals and interpretation services.
Our services, which are offered free of charge, are geared towards children, youth and families as well as the elderly.
Our newcomer services are aimed at ensuring the effective integration of new and recent immigrants into Canadian society.
Our children, youth and family services on the other hand seek to promote and enable change in attitude, knowledge, assets, and behaviour that reduce family conflict, support and improve healthy communication and living, and help at-risk children and youth become successful members of the community.
Program offerings include: Income Tax Clinics; Domestic Violence Prevention Outreach; Family Court Support; Foster Parent Awareness; Youth at Risk Intervention; Youth Entrepreneurship and Coding; Youth in Transition; School Readiness and Engagement; Culture for Health; Intergenerational Buddy Program; and Pre-Natal Classes.
